Barnsley AT Team

Biography

I qualified as a Speech and Language Therapist from Newcastle University in 2010, initially working in Sheffield for the Neurological Enablement Service and Community Stroke Service. Since 2015 I have been working as a Clinician at the Barnsley Assistive Technology Team, specialising in augmentative and alternative communication and environmental controls.

Barnsley Assistive Technology offers a specialised service across Yorkshire and Humber, working with local professionals to provide Assistive Technology to adult and paediatric clients with severe disabilities. In addition the team collaborates and leads on a number of research projects related to electronic assistive technology, so I am currently also a part-time Research Associate on the I-ASC project.

Current research projects

I-ASC – Identifying appropriate symbol communication aids for children who are non-speaking: enhancing clinical decision making (HS&DR – 14/70/153).

The I-ASC project is led by Manchester Metropolitan University in collaboration with the University of Leeds and Barnsley Assistive Technology Team.

The aim of the project is to influence current practice to improve the consistency and quality of clinical decision making in the provision of symbol communication aids. The project is formed of five work packages over three years. I am currently contributing to Work package 1: Systematic review and Work package 4: Discrete choice experiments.
